Steve Fernandes is a passionate climber and the founder of Valley Bouldering. He specialises in bouldering, trains five times a week, and brings over three years of experience as a routesetter. As the island’s only dedicated bouldering instructor, he has coached around 30 young climbers and several adults, sharing his expertise and love for the sport with the next generation.

In 2023, Steve began exploring Madeira’s wild landscapes to uncover new bouldering spots. Over the past two years, he has discovered more than 1,000 boulders hidden in beautiful valleys, along the dramatic coastline, and in places with breathtaking mountain views.

His goal is to share Madeira’s incredible bouldering potential with visitors from all around the world. He wants people to see that this beautiful Atlantic island is not just for hiking, it is also an amazing destination for bouldering.

Steve continues to teach and inspire local climbers, helping to build a growing outdoor bouldering community, a big challenge on an island with no tradition of the sport. In October 2025, he took three of his students to compete in the National Bouldering Competition on the Portuguese mainland, a remarkable achievement that had never been done before. His mission remains the same: to make Madeira not just a beautiful holiday island, but a great place for bouldering too.
