Steve Fernandes is a passionate climber and the founder of Valley Bouldering. He specialises in bouldering, trains five times a week and works as a routesetter at the Madeira Climbing Center. He is currently the only dedicated bouldering instructor on the island, teaching around 25 young climbers each week, along with a few adults too.

In 2023, Steve began exploring Madeira’s wild landscapes to uncover new bouldering spots. Over the past two years, he has discovered more than 1,000 boulders hidden in beautiful valleys, along the dramatic coastline and in places with breathtaking mountain views.

His goal is to share Madeira’s incredible bouldering potential with visitors from all around the world. He wants people to see that this beautiful Atlantic island is not just for hiking, it is also an amazing destination for bouldering.

Steve dreams of building a local outdoor bouldering community, which is a big challenge on an island with no tradition of outdoor climbing. But he is determined to change that, starting with teaching local children at the climbing centre. One day, he hopes they will continue what he has started and help make Madeira not just a beautiful holiday island, but a fantastic place for bouldering too.
